Lose Those Last 20 Pounds—Here’s How

I hear from so many people who have successfully dropped weight thanks to living life as a Brain Warrior*. Congratulations! I also get a lot of questions about how to get to your final healthy weight. Whether you have 5, 10, or 20 pounds to go, here are three tips to help you lose those last few stubborn pounds.

1. Support your gut health.

When you want to ramp up your body’s ability to reach your goal weight, I would encourage you to be more intentional about supporting your gut health. Increase probiotic foods like sauerkraut, kefir, or yogurt (plant-based preferably) and consider taking a multi-strain probiotic supplement. In addition, boost the amount of prebiotic fibers in your daily diet. Prebiotic foods that are high in fiber—think asparagus, oats, and Jerusalem artichoke—fuel the good bacteria in your gut. Having more friendly bacteria in your gastrointestinal system can help you feel full, reduces inflammation, and improves the synthesis of neurotransmitters—all of which can promote weight loss.

2. Avoid environmental toxins.

Sometimes, what’s causing your body to hang on to those last extra pounds is exposure to environmental toxins, such as pesticides, plastic food containers, chemicals in your personal care products. Toxins in the foods we eat, the air we breathe, and the products we put on our skin can interfere with optimal metabolic processes and also with the health of your gut. They are so detrimental to your system, they are also called “diabesogens” and “obesogens” because they can make you diabetic and obese. To minimize your exposure to toxins, you need to adopt a Warrior mentality and do the following:

  • Buy organic foods whenever possible
  • Eliminate antibiotic-tainted animal proteins
  • Avoid plastics with BPA/BPS linings
  • Toss out any chemical-laden cleaning products or body care products
  • Drink filtered water
  • Use an air purifier in your home (at least in your bedroom)

3. Move more.

One way to rev up your metabolism to reach your goal is to move more throughout the day. Even if you are already fairly active, remember to incorporate the little things—taking the stairs instead of the elevator, going for a walk on your work break, and getting out of your chair every hour to get the blood flowing. The more active you can be, even in small ways, can add up to a huge benefit for reaching your ideal body weight.
