So, you want to find a healthy way to honor your dad this year, but aren’t sure how considering we’re still in the midst of a pandemic? Here are several fitness-friendly ideas to (safely) give your loved one the gift of better brain health this Father’s Day, as well as one way to celebrate with brain-boosting food that’s nutritious and delicious.

Go for a walk/hike. Get a little one-on-one time with dad by going for a brisk walk or hike. It will get your hearts pumping, which boosts blood flow to the brain, and it will give you a chance to connect even while you practice physical distancing.

Go for a bike ride (with helmets!). Hopping on a couple of bikes is another great activity that lets you spend special time with your father while staying 6 feet apart. Cycling stimulates regions of the brain, such as the hippocampus, which is involved in memory, moods, and learning. That’s good news for dad. Don’t forget to wear helmets to avoid any brain injuries in case of a fall.

Play golf. One of the first activities that got the green light to resume during the pandemic is golf. You can keep your distance, while enjoying each other’s company. The fresh air, socialization, and mental challenge triggers the release of feel-good endorphins that enhance happiness and lower stress. Be sure to walk the course rather than use a golf cart to get more steps in toward your 10,000 steps a day.

Play table tennis. One of the world’s best activities for the brain, table tennis also keeps you at a safe distance to help avoid the spread of COVID-19. Not only will it work up a healthy sweat, but it will also give multiple regions of your brain a workout, and it reduces the risk of developing dementia. Isn’t that a great gift for your dad?

Deliver a healthy meal. If sharing a festive meal together isn’t possible, you can always drop off a basket of delights for the man who raised you. Fill it with organic fresh fruits and veggies, make a Roasted Vegetable Salad (and top it with some cold poached salmon), or prepare some of dad’s favorites— such as Chicken Wings—that can be re-heated.

If you can’t be with your dad on this holiday, do his brain a favor by giving him a chance to learn more about keeping his brain healthy and his memory sharp with The Brain Warrior’s Way online course. Even better, take the course together and share notes and insights via Zoom. It will help you both because with a better brain comes stronger relationships.
