Men who eat the most fiber are 56 percent less likely to die from cardiovascular disease, infectious disease and respiratory disorders, according to a study of nearly 400,000 people ages 50 or older, published in JAMA Internal Medicine.

A high-fiber diet lowered women’s risk of mortality from those causes by 59 percent, researchers from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and American Association of Retired People (AARP) reported. In the study, which was the first to link fiber to a longer life, participants were tracked for about 9 years.

Eating high-fiber foods—such as broccoli, berries, onions, flax skins, nuts, green beans, cauliflower, celery and sweet potatoes—makes you feel full faster and longer, while helping keep your blood pressure low and stable.
