With Valentine’s Day quickly approaching, it’s easy to default to a dinner date out and share a less-than-healthy rich meal or indulge in a box of sugar-laden chocolates. Although these may seem like well-meaning ways to celebrate together, you’ll end up paying a price the next day when you wake up feeling mentally and physically sluggish—and definitely not sexy!
But I’ve got a great workaround for you! There are foods—some of which you may already have in your kitchen—that are considered to have aphrodisiac properties and are good for your brain too (it’s actually your most important sex organ ).
Take a look at the ideas below and see how you can cook up a little home-made love this Valentine’s Day.
Cinnamon: This tasty versatile spice is one that’s in almost everyone’s cupboard which is a good thing because it’s high in antioxidants and can help to regulate blood sugar too. The fact that it’s considered to be a natural aphrodisiac is an added bonus. Put it to good use on February 14th by starting the day with my Cinnamon Latte Recipe. Here’s what goes in it:
- 12 ounces half-caf coffee
- 3-4 ounces of organic, unsweetened, vanilla-flavored almond milk
- a few drops of vanilla, chocolate, or hazelnut stevia
- pinch of erythritol
- dash of cinnamon
All you have to do is brew the coffee, heat the almond milk, pour both into a blender, add the stevia, erythritol, and cinnamon, then blend until it’s really frothy (like cappuccino). Pour it into 2 mugs and toast to the start of a great Valentine’s Day.
Salmon: This fish is loaded with omega-3s which help to boost blood flow, and we know how important that is not only for our brain, but for our nether regions too. What I love about salmon is that it’s really versatile and there are so many ways to prepare it. By cooking up some Salmon Burgers for lunch or making Pan-Seared Salmon for a romantic dinner, you can hardly go wrong with this type of fish.
Vegetables: Kale, arugula, lettuce, Swiss chard, and carrots are some of the veggies that contain a lot of natural nitrates that also get your blood pumping. Putting together a creative salad to accompany your protein is well worth the effort for the one you love. My Clever Kale Slaw (you can swap out the kale for some chard if you prefer), is chock full of blood flow goodness, and has a little cinnamon in it too!
Dark Chocolate: It goes without saying that Valentine’s Day without some chocolate is a little like the 4th of July without fireworks. Fortunately there are healthy ways to enjoy this delicious treat without jeopardizing your health! Plus the cocoa in dark chocolate helps to boost the feel-good brain chemicals serotonin and dopamine which is great for getting you in the mood. Check out my Fabulous Fruit Fondue recipe with its decadent taste and texture. It’s easy to make and you can have extra fun by taking turns dipping the fruit in the chocolate fondue and feeding each other.
