3 Steps To Get The “Monkey” Off Your Brain

Mindfulness and meditation are both great ways to relax and calm your mind. We are able to be in tune with our environment and become more connected to those we love and our surroundings when we meditate and are mindful. Life however, can be chaotic and in the midst of the crazy, some of us, especially women, tend to get “monkey” of your mind.

What is “monkey mind”? It’s a term I use when my brain is inundated with chatter and is so busy that it feels like a monkey is doing flips in my brain, stealing my focus. I have too many thoughts in my brain which makes it harder for me to concentrate and complete the important things I need to accomplish.

There are many reasons for getting “monkey mind”. Are you eating right? What’s your diet like? Do you exercise? Do you meditate? Are you focusing on what you’re grateful for, the things in your life that bring you joy?

What you eat affects how you see the world and not eating right can distort your thoughts just like a drug does. Just like it entices you, junk food entices your monkey to come out and play. Food affects your mood, energy levels and ability to calm yourself. One of my favorite quotes says this best;

“The wise man should consider that health is the greatest of human blessings. Let food be your medicine and medicine be your food”

Hippocrates

Step 1 is really to ensure that you are eating the right foods to help control your energy levels. That’s why I created the Omni Diet. It’s designed to provide you with a perfect balance of nutrients to help tame the “monkey mind”.

Exercise is one of the strongest natural medicines known to man. Did you know that exercise increases dopamine, serotonin and endorphins? It also helps with depression and anxiety, so by including exercise as one of your daily habits you can calm your “monkey mind” and help improve your overall health. A cardiologist told me that there is no medicine made at this time that is as effective for treating the heart as exercise is!

Step 2 is to find an activity that you love and can incorporate into your life. For me, it is martial arts. During this activity I find that I am 100% present and focused. It is my form of meditation. I love to meditate. Yoga is a great place to begin your journey, but for some people like me, even yoga couldn’t help my monkey brain. My mind is so busy. I needed something intense – like me. Don’t feel guilty if that’s the case. There are other types of meditations like guided meditations that involve music and hypnosis to help you settle your mind and visualize your success.

Step 3 is pretty easy! Write down three things that you are grateful for every day. It changes your brain chemistry. Start your morning off focusing on what you are grateful for and why. I’m grateful for my health, Chloe and my husband, Daniel. That’s what keeps me going and keeps my brain focused on the right thing.

I have a challenge for you! Every day for one week I’d like you to meditate, focusing on gratitude (write it down), and exercise. Please let me know how it goes!

We want to help you increase your mindfulness and decrease your monkey mind, so we developed our Relaxation, Focus & Memory Training MP3. This guided meditation will teach you how to tap into the power of your brain to enhance your overall wellness and relaxation. I know you will find it very helpful.
