Do Calories Really Matter?

As a Brain Warrior we’re going to help fuel your body for success.  The most effective warriors have used food as medicine for centuries. They ate for one reason: To Win! You do this by paying attention to the quality of your calories and the messages those calories are sending to your body.

Think about this, if you were a warrior on a vital mission, and you had 500 calories to eat, how would you choose to use them?  Would you choose the cinnamon roll or the big colorful salad with lean protein, avocado, blueberries and walnuts? The 500 calories are the same but the messages those calories are sending to your body, brain, and hormones are completely different. And the results those calories will yield may make the difference between success and failure!

That cinnamon roll is going to be gobbled up quickly and leave you feeling hungrier, sluggish, and unfocused. On the other hand, the salad will have you feeling energized, sharp, motivated and ready to rock.

So what if I told you that you ARE a warrior with a mission! Your family, co-workers and community depend on you to be your best. If I’m on a mission I want fellow warriors who are sharp and vital helping me accomplish it. Here are some tips to help you eat like a Brain Warrior so you can fuel your brain and body for success:

  1. Start with a Brain Warrior protein breakfast: Think protein with a little fat and veggies. Eggs with avocado and steamed veggies is perfect. Skip the cereal and bagels that will leave you feeling sluggish.
  2. Replace sugar with stevia or erythritol: Even moderate amounts of sugar can increase inflammation, trigger cravings, stress hormones, give you brain fog and promote illness.
  3. Eat high quality calories: Take the time to read labels of everything you buy and understand them. Watch the video below to learn more.
  4. Get the big picture: All calories are NOT the same: Eating 800 calories in Twinkies over a short period of time showed the same amount of weight loss as someone eating a healthy diet. Trying to lose weight with sugar laden, fake-fat filled calories will ultimately lead to inflammation and weight gain, and you’ll become insulin resistant. As your insulin levels are now rising, and it will start to hoard that fat from the Twinkies. That’s why eating for long term benefits is more beneficial than meeting your short-term weight loss goals.

There is no such thing as “empty calories or junk food.” What you put in your mouth is either medicine or it is poison. The Brain Warrior’s Way is a plan that includes both an abundance of illness-fighting nutrients from whole, living plant foods and a portion of high-quality protein (plant or animal), with a mixture of healthy fat to keep the brain sharp and muscles and organs functioning at peak performance.
